Sign language is probably the last thing you expect to need to learn, if you have a hearing baby. However, Joseph Garcia a child development expert from America discovered 20 years ago how easily hearing babies of deaf parents learned sign language. He also noticed that these babies appeared less demanding than babies who didn't know sign language because they could express their thoughts and needs more easily. So why shouldn't hearing parents of hearing babies enjoy the benefits of signing, too? After all, Garcia figured, if a baby can sign for what she wants instead of screaming, everyone — Mum, Dad, and their baby — will be happier. | |
While baby signing doesn't promise to cut out tears or tantrums, babies as young as 6 months old have been taught to "sign" successfully,. This is due to the fact that, their understanding of language and their motor skills develop much faster than their ability to speak. Babies also love to mimic and copy people. Most babies, for example, discover how to wave and point long before they can say "bye-bye" or "look at that!" Baby Talk UK uses British Sign Language (BSL) within all of their courses, which are a lot of fun for children, toddlers and babies alike, as we sign songs, recite nursery rhymes and play with toys and puppets. Signing also helps bilingual children to make a connection between two or more languages. Baby signing also has many benefits for children with special needs, at Baby Talk UK, we are able to help and support hearing parents with hearing impaired babies and toddlers. We offer a more private and intimate workshop in the comfort of your own home for all members of the family to attend while giving lots of emotional support. These workshops are also an advantage to parents with babies and toddlers who have Downs Syndrome, Autistic Spectrum Disorders and speech and language difficulties. Here at Baby Talk UK, we also recognise the importance of offering our service to Nurseries and Child-minders and have devised a unique programme which relates to many of the points on the SureStart framework, as all young children are included, they can use signs to negotiate problems, they become better communicators and develop their confidence and sense of identity. Other benefits include a reduction in noise levels, a reduction in aggressive behaviour, especially hitting and biting, and an increase in positive caregiver-child interactions. |
